Zizek!, sometimes written as Žižek!, is a 2005 American/Canadian documentary film  – both an unforgettable lesson in philosophy and a compelling portrait of an intellectual maverick, the “wild man of theory”: the eminent Slovenian philosopher and psychoanalyst Slavoj Žižek.

The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema is a 2006 documentary directed and produced by Sophie Fiennes, scripted and presented by Slavoj Žižek. It explores a number of films from a psychoanalytic theoretical perspective. With his engaging and passionate approach to thinking, Zizek delves into the hidden language of cinema, uncovering what movies can tell us about ourselves. Whether he is untangling the famously baffling films of David Lynch, or overturning everything you thought you knew about Hitchcock, Zizek illuminates the screen with his passion, intellect, and unfailing sense of humour. THE PERVERT’S GUIDE TO CINEMA cuts its cloth from the very world of the movies it discusses; by shooting at original locations and from replica sets it creates the uncanny illusion that Zizek is speaking from ‘within’ the films themselves.

Death Race 2000

In the year 2000, the United States has been destroyed by a financial crisis and a military coup. Political parties have collapsed into a single Bipartisan Party, which also fulfills the religious functions of a unified church and state. The resulting fascist police state, the United Provinces, is headed by the cult figure “Mr. President” (Sandy McCallum). The people are kept satisfied through a stream of gory gladiatorial entertainment, which includes the bloody spectacle of the Annual Transcontinental Road Race, depicted as a symbol of American values and way of life. The coast-to-coast, three-day race is run on public roads, and points are scored not just for speed, but for the number of innocent pedestrians struck and killed.

Frankenstein (David Carradine) is the most celebrated racer and is the government’s champion. He is reputed to be part machine, rebuilt after many crashes. He regularly battles with the other teams, particularly “Machine Gun” Joe Viterbo (Sylvester Stallone), who hates being second.[...]

Married to the Eiffel Tower

Posted in documentary with tags , on December 15, 2011 by a.l.k.m.y.

This Documentary explores the world of three women who are sexually and emotionally attracted to objects. These so-called ‘objectum sexuals’ shy away from contact with other humans in favour of structures large and small.

Naisho, an American woman, has been lovingly connected with the Golden Gate Bridge, has a fence for a lover in her bedroom, used to be in love with an archery bow and is now officially married to the Eiffel Tower.

Together with Naisho and the documentary crew, a swedish woman introduces us to some of her lovers – a guillotine and a fence, and another American woman gives us an insight to her three greatest lovers in this world. A carnival fun ride, a church fence and the Empire State building in New York.

It is a journey into the notions of love, tolerance, freedom of choice in our modern world, and a road towards understanding objectophilia better.

A Room and a Half (2009)

When asked in an interview whether he ever intended to return to his Motherland, Joseph Brodsky replied: “Such a journey could only take place anonymously…”
The creators of this film imagined that the journey in question was undertaken after all, selecting the genre of an ironic fairytale. The poet sails to the country of his childhood, and with him we traverse not only geographical expanses, but travel through time as well; stringing together a number of facts from the Nobel Prize Laureate’s biography, we return to the USSR of the 50s and early 60s, soaking up the atmosphere of the “European” city of Petersburg, to this day Russia’s cultural center.  Along with live-action sequences, the film features animation, as well as documentary footage concerning Brodsky and his milieu.

Some of the animated sequences — of winged horses and flying sleds, of Brodsky as a farm animal on all fours drawing a cart — suggest Chagall. Other, more elegant pictures — of pianos and other musical instruments flying in formation while framed against the heroic architecture of St. Petersburg — are closer to Magritte’s surrealism. Visually, it is an ode to St. Petersburg (its museums, architecture and statuary are lovingly photographed), and to the Neva River, which runs by the city.

With its unabashedly nostalgic glow, the film belongs to what might be called the “rosebud” school (after “Citizen Kane”) of film biographies that locate the essence of a life in childhood memories. Recurrent images in the film are visual representations of the family’s house cat. The youthful Brodsky (Evgeniy Ogandzhanyan) is shown conversing with his father in meows and later subverting the solemnity of a school anthem sung by a chorus by substituting cat cries for words. He later confides to a friend that he wants to be reincarnated as a cat in Venice.
